Dr. Boukary Sawadogo is an author, professor, African film and media consultant, screen media practitioner
(directing, archiving, and preserving), and the founding director of the Harlem African Animation Festival in
New York City. He has training and background in film, diplomacy, and international relations.
As professor of film at the City University of New York’s City College and Graduate Center, he teaches and
researches on African cinema and animation. His books on African cinema are used in film and media studies
courses at universities across the country. He has juried and led discussions at film festivals in the United
States, Canada, India, Europe, and Africa. Dr. Sawadogo is a collector of original print African movie posters.
In addition to investigating animation and live-action cinema, Dr. Sawadogo’s writings interrogate the place
and trajectory of Africa in the world today through its historical and contemporary diasporas.
Dr. Sawadogo is civically engaged in the New York City’s Harlem community and in the West African nation of
Burkina Faso through the work of associations and personal initiatives.
